This is what happens when I am left at home with a feverish toddler who decides to take a monumental nap.
We start with icky carpeted stairs:
And end up with icky, UN-carpeted stairs! Ta-da!
Wow, they actually look BETTER in the photo than they do in real life, if you can even imagine. They are, in fact, in terrible shape and I got the "look" from Tim when he got home. You know the "look"...the "I can't leave you alone for one minute without you painting/destroying/removing something in this house" look. Followed by a heavy sigh and a trudge up the (UGLY) stairs. It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission is my policy.
What were once glorious, solid wood stairs are now cracked, rough, and uneven. As soon as I started tearing up the carpet, I realized I had opened a bad can of worms. I have a bad feeling this DIY refinishing project is going to turn into a DIY calling of the hardwood floor guy and handing over a check project. Sorry, honey.

Oooo, it is going to be so worth it, though! So pretty! That must have been one amazing nap.
I am getting ready to start a massive DIY overhaul of my house. I am not excited because DIY is not my thing. What this means is that I am going to be asking you A LOT of questions. Also? Now I am totally scared to rip the ugly, filthy, blue shag carpet off of my stairs.
LOL! Oh, we are SO separated at birth... that's exactly the kind of thing I would do. I think the stairs are already prettier, though, and I can't wait to see the end results!
(Oh and your husband is awesome for simply sighing... mine would probably not have taken it so well. He didn't when I peeled away a "test corner" of our stairwell).
I love that when your child takes a nap you rip out carpet and start overhauling.
When my child takes a nap, I end up watching Jersey Shore for two and half hours.
You are insane.
OOH! Those stairs are going to be gorgeous when you're done. I wish I could start ripping things apart. However, I rent, and I do not think my landlord would appreciate such things. Alas.
I envy you, homeowner!
I think it'll be worth it.
OH I wish I had stairs like that hiding under my carpets.
